I grew up on the island of Martha's Vineyard and the beach has always been my second home. Ten summers spent lifeguarding on the island beaches meant I was almost always in a bikini! I was usually disappointed with the fit and comfort of suits I purchased- I couldn't wait to take them off at the end of a long day at work.
When I entered the "real world" with a liberal arts degree, I was completely lost- but knew that I had an overwhelming need to create and an obsessive eye for detail. I had also developed some experience with sewing machines over the years, always having tailored clothing to fit my 6' tall frame.
roySWIM began in the summer of 2013 with 5 suits on a rack at my local flea market, and has been an immense learning process and labor of love. Evening courses in basic sewing and pattern making at FIT created a stronger base for my general sewing skills, but as a stubbornly independent person, my swimwear design and construction skills have been self-taught from the start.
At the core of my business is the belief that suits can be both striking AND comfortable- because I know that comfort and confidence go hand in hand.
In 10 years I have designed, cut and sewn over 6,000 suits! I finally have some sewing help from a local seamstress, but I still finish every stock piece and sew every custom order myself.
In winter months I can be found attempting to escape the cold in other parts of the world- working on new suit designs while running my business online. Every summer I am inevitably lured back to my island home, where it all began.
